Creating the Cardboard Christ Cutout

A Cardboard Christ really does exist!

Before you go to the effort of making your own cardboard cutout, there is a place you can buy an actual cutout of Jesus: www.cardboardcutouts.com.

I found this item when searching for an alternative to making one yourself. It would really look better than anything a person could make, but the drawback is that the script calls for the cutout to be ripped in half near the conclusion. My suggestion is, if you order this life-size standup, to cut it in half at the middle, then use a wide piece of tape on the back to put it back together. This way, when it comes time to tear it, it can be done at the pre-existing cut and all that will rip is the tape. Then it can be put back together again for any subsequent performances or use.

The price is $29.95 plus shipping. Note: I do not sell this item. The link is to a company online that sells characters standups.

Creating Your Own

The first place to start is the backing for the standup. I suggest a large white foam-core project board such as can be found at any office supply store or even the school supplies department of your favorite mega-store. I think you know which one I mean.

I suggest making the figure from the waist up, but if you have the time, materials and inclination, you could make the entire life-size figure. Recruit someone from your church that is artistically talented to do this. The figure can be drawn with simple heavy-marker lines in black and white, or it can be colored in with paint. Below is a guide to print out to help in the face and head if you wish to use it, but the rest of the body you can design on your own. A coloring book about the life of Jesus will give you some good simple ideas for how to draw the body and clothes.

It's best to draw the figure first, using a thick black marker to ink in the pencil lines. Then use an exacto knife to cut around it and make your cutout figure. If you lightly score the back from one side to another you can fold the cutout forward along this line for easy transport. This same line will make it easier to rip in half when the time comes for the actual performance.

The script also calls for a dog bite mark to show in the side of the standup. Use the exacto knife to cut out a jagged section on one side, about the size of your fist.

In the near future I will be making available for purchase an overhead projector transparency with an image you can project onto your cardboard and trace. Please check back sometime near the end of February to see if it's ready.

In the meantime, here are some graphics you can print out and use for a template to design your Cardboard Christ prop. (Right-click on the image and save it to your hard-drive.) Have fun!
